Carnatic Music is a system of music commonly associated with many parts of india: Tamil nadu, Andhra Pradesh,Karnataka, Kerala. Carnatic music is also known as Carnataka sangita in Tamil. Carnatic Music consists of 2 genres: classical music, Hindustani music. The main focus of Carnatic music is on vocal music. Most compositions are written to be sung and also to be played in instruments. There are 4 basic elements of Carnatic music: sruthi, thala, raga, swara. These 4 things have different meanings.Sruti is means relative musical pitch, Thala means rhythmic cycles, swara is means the musical sound of a single note, raga means melodic formula .These 4 things designs the Carnatic music.
Basically there are 3 musicians who perform Carnatic music; vocalist the principal performer, violinists the melodic accompaniment and mridangists the rhythm accompaniment. There are many type of music instruments other than violin mridangam like kanjira, ghatam, morsing, veena, flute, chitraveena etc.
Sruthi: Sruthi is one of the main element in Carnatic music .It is also used in the sense of graded pitches in octave. Sruthi decides the pitch of a performer.
Swara: There are totally 7 swaras which is commonly known as saptaswaras. The 7 swaras are: sa, ri, ga, ma, pa, da, ni (shadja ,rishabam, ghandaram, madyamam, panchamam, deivadham, nishadam). These swaras are classified into 2 groups: 1) dominant 2) sub-dominant.
The shadja and panchamam belongs to the dominant group and the remaining swaras belongs to sub-dominant group because shadja and panchamam doesn't change in any raga, but the remaining swaras changes in every single raga. The aarohanam (ascending) and avarohanam (descending) which is made of swaras enhances the composition of raga.
Raga: Raga is the main thing in which the song is dependent.Ragas that have whole saptaswaras is known as sampurna ragas. There are totally 72 sampurna ragas which is known as 72 melakarthas. Each melakartha raga has many janya ragas. The first 36 ragas has sudha madhyamam and the next 36 ragas has prati madhyamam. THALAS: Thalas are rhythmic cycles which is built from grouping of beats.Thalas are made of 3 basic parts: laghu, dhrtam, anudhrtam. Many complex thalas have these three and another 3 parts plutam, guru, kakkapadam. A laghu has five variants (nadai) namely pancha nadai. The 5 nadais are chatusram, misram, thisram, kandam, sankeernam.
