The gunpowder was invented by the Chinese alchemists, accidentally. It is argued that it was found in the 9th century itself but originally it was found in the 11th century. Gunpowder was the first burning explosive to be ever found.
Its invention is solely credited to the Chinese alchemists. It is even listed in the "Four Great Inventions" of China. Actually the Chinese alchemists where on a quest to find an elixir for immortality. This elixir was meant to be given to the soldiers who where in the warfare. As the alchemists failed to invent the elixir , they wanted to preserve their formula for elixir for later. to preserve, they added 30% of saltpeter to it, which is also highly flammable. When they found out that after adding the saltpeter to it could explode. They hence , used it as a gunpowder. And this is the unfortunate history of the gunpowder.
